Squat stands for squats and barbell training

Squat stands provide supports for a barbell before and after exercises such as squats, bench presses and overhead presses. Their relatively compact design can suit home gyms and smaller training spaces. Check that the model supports your intended exercises and loads.

Sometimes called squat racks, squat stands may consist of two separate uprights or a connected frame. Their footprint and ease of moving vary by design. Allow room for the barbell, weight plates and full movement as well as the stands themselves.

What are squat stands?

Squat stands hold a barbell at a suitable starting and finishing height. The bar rests or J-hooks support it between sets; they are not a substitute for safety catches. If a model has safety arms, check their intended use, length and separate load limits. Do not assume that every stand can catch a failed repetition.

Squat stands or a power rack?

Squat stands offer an open setup, while a power rack surrounds the lifting area and can provide internal safety bars or straps. Stands may take up less space, but stability and protection depend on the exact model, installation and equipment. Compare the usable space, safety provisions and accessory compatibility of each option.

Adjustable barbell supports

Height adjustment lets you position the bar for different exercises and users. Check the adjustment range, spacing between settings and locking mechanism. For bench presses, confirm that the supports adjust low enough and leave room for your bench. The bar’s rackable length must also suit the support spacing; with separate stands, follow the manufacturer’s positioning instructions.

A compact option for home gyms

Measure the space needed during use as well as for storage. Check maximum load, base stability and any anchoring requirements, and place the stands on a level, load-bearing surface. Return the bar under control without pushing the stands out of position. Check which supports and accessories are included; barbells, weight plates and benches are supplied only when expressly stated.
