Which fitness ball do you need?

The right ball depends mainly on your training goals. Large, air-filled gym balls provide an unstable surface for balance and core exercises. Small massage balls are designed for targeted self-massage. Medicine balls, wall balls and slam balls add weight to strength, throwing and conditioning exercises. Consider the ball type, weight, dimensions and permitted uses when choosing.

Gym balls for balance and core training

A gym ball, also known as a stability ball or Swiss ball, is used for balance, stability and core exercises. Different diameters let you choose a size suited to your height and the exercise. Weighted Swiss balls are less likely to roll away when at rest and may offer additional training options.

Massage balls for targeted self-massage

A massage ball lets you apply localised pressure to areas such as your feet, calves, glutes, back muscles or shoulders. Round balls are versatile, while peanut-shaped and double massage balls offer a more stable shape or a gap in the centre. Different sizes and firmness levels allow a gentler or more intense massage.

Medicine balls and wall balls

Medicine balls are weighted training balls for strength, rotational and partner exercises. Wall balls are generally larger and softer, and are used for dynamic exercises that involve controlled throws against a suitable wall. Choose a weight that lets you complete the full movement with good technique.

Slam balls for powerful throws

Slam balls are designed for exercises in which you throw the ball forcefully onto a suitable surface. They usually have little bounce, helping the ball stay close after a slam. Only use a ball explicitly rated for slams: an ordinary gym ball or medicine ball is not automatically suitable for repeated high-impact throws.

Storage systems for fitness balls

A fitness ball storage rack keeps your training area tidy and balls off the floor. Racks are available for gym balls, medicine balls, wall balls and other weighted training balls. Check the rack’s capacity and dimensions to make sure it suits the balls you want to store.

What should you look for when buying a training ball?

Alongside the type and weight, compare the diameter, maximum load where applicable, grip and construction. Always check which exercises and surfaces the ball is suitable for. Inspect it regularly for wear or damage and leave enough clear space for throwing exercises. Increase the weight and training intensity gradually.
