Yoga and fitness mats for comfortable training
A suitable yoga mat offers comfort and grip for yoga, Pilates and floor exercises. Compare thinner mats for a firm feel with more cushioned fitness mats. Explore carrying straps and storage systems too, and check whether accessories are included or sold separately.
Which yoga mat suits you?
Choose according to your exercises and preferred cushioning. A relatively thin, firm mat can suit standing yoga poses and balance work. For abdominal exercises, stretching, Pilates and other floor workouts, extra cushioning may feel more comfortable. Consider the mat’s firmness as well as its thickness.
How thick should a yoga mat be?
A mat around 4 mm thick can offer a practical balance between cushioning and contact with the floor. Thicker exercise mats, for example 10 or 15 mm, may provide more cushioning under knees, elbows and back. These are examples, not a universal recommendation: material and density also affect the feel. A very soft mat may feel less stable during balance poses.
Yoga mat or fitness mat?
Yoga mats are generally thinner and designed with grip and stable footing in mind. Fitness mats are often thicker for comfort during floor exercises. If you practise both, compare grip, firmness and cushioning rather than choosing by the product name alone. Check the intended use of each model.
What should you look for when buying?
Alongside thickness, compare length, width, grip and material. Choose enough space for your movements and a mat that sits securely on your training surface. If you carry it to classes, consider its weight and how easily it rolls up. Follow any instructions about suitable floors and use conditions.
Carrying and storing your mat
A carrying strap makes a rolled mat easier to transport. Mat racks can keep several mats organised in a studio or gym. For hanging storage, check that the mat is designed for suspension and that its eyelet spacing and size match the rack. Confirm the rack’s capacity and the dimensions accepted by carrying accessories.
Cleaning a yoga mat
Clean the mat according to the manufacturer’s care instructions after use, and let it dry fully before rolling or storing it. This helps avoid trapping moisture inside. Use only cleaning methods suitable for the material, and check instructions before machine washing, soaking or using cleaning products.
