Storage racks and holders for barbells
A barbell storage rack keeps bars organised, accessible and off the training floor. Choose from space-saving wall holders and freestanding racks for several bars. Compare storage orientation, capacity and compatibility with standard bars or Olympic bars with 50 mm loading sleeves.
Why use a barbell storage rack?
Loose barbells take up space and can obstruct movement around the gym. A suitable rack helps prevent bars from rolling and makes different types easy to identify and reach. This is useful at home and in shared training spaces where several people use the same equipment.
Wall racks for barbells
A wall rack leaves the floor beneath it free and can suit compact spaces. Depending on the model, bars are stored horizontally or vertically along the wall. Some horizontal racks have two separate sections whose spacing can be set to suit the supported bars. Follow the specified mounting distances and allow room for protruding ends.
Freestanding barbell racks
A freestanding rack does not require wall mounting, although some models may need floor anchoring. Many floor racks hold Olympic bars upright in individual tubes that accept their 50 mm loading sleeves. Check overhead clearance for lifting each bar out of its holder, as well as stability and the manufacturer’s permitted storage method.
Storage for 30 mm or 50 mm bars?
Bars in the standard 30 mm system have 30 mm loading sections. Olympic bars have 50 mm loading sleeves for plates with a 50 mm hole diameter; the grip section is usually thinner. A vertical tube must suit the inserted sleeve’s diameter and length. For horizontal storage, also check the contact points, support spacing and bar shape rather than relying on sleeve diameter alone.
How many barbells can you store?
Capacity varies by model. Count the straight, short and specialty bars you want to store and allow for future additions. Compare the number of positions and the total and individual holder load limits. The advertised number of spaces does not guarantee that the same number of bulky specialty bars will fit side by side.
Will specialty bars fit?
Curl bars, triceps bars, safety squat bars and hex bars differ in shape, width and weight distribution. Check the spacing, storage orientation and supported models. A rack that accepts a straight Olympic bar with 50 mm loading sleeves is not automatically suitable for every specialty bar with the same sleeve diameter.
What matters when wall mounting?
Use a wall capable of supporting the combined weight of the rack and all stored bars. Choose fixings suitable for the wall construction and install the rack level according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Leave enough space to place and remove long bars without striking nearby equipment or surfaces.
Storing barbells securely
Remove weight plates before storage unless the rack is explicitly designed for loaded bars. Place bars gently, distribute the load as instructed and never exceed the stated capacity or load limits. Check fixings, protective liners and contact surfaces regularly. Barbells are included only when explicitly listed in the product description.
