Pull cords and return elastics for rowing machines
A rowing machine’s pull cord connects the rowing handle to the resistance system and is heavily loaded with every stroke. Here you can find replacement pull cords, pull straps and elastic cords for specific rowing machines. Always check the brand, model, dimensions and function of the component before ordering.
What does a rowing machine’s pull cord do?
When you pull the rowing handle towards you, the pull cord or strap transfers that movement to the flywheel or another resistance system. After the stroke, a return mechanism moves the strap and handle back to their starting position.
Pull cord or return elastic?
A pull cord or strap transfers the pulling force during the rowing movement. A return elastic has a different function: it helps return the pull cord and handle after each stroke. These components may work together in the same mechanism, but they are not interchangeable.
When should you replace a pull cord?
Replace a pull cord if it frays, tears, stretches excessively or becomes thinner in places. A jerky rowing movement or a strap that no longer winds straight may also indicate wear or a guiding problem. Do not continue using the rowing machine if the cord is visibly damaged.
When is the elastic worn?
A worn return elastic may cause the handle to return slowly, incompletely or not at all. However, the problem may also be caused by an incorrectly wound strap, a blockage or another faulty component in the return mechanism. Check the entire system first.
Are rowing machine pull cords universal?
No, pull cords and elastic cords are generally designed for a specific brand and model. Length, width, thickness, elasticity and mounting points must match the winding and resistance systems. Similar dimensions alone are not enough to establish compatibility.
How do you find the right component?
Check the rowing machine’s brand and full model designation and compare them with the product description. Also determine whether you need the pull strap or return elastic. Photos of the attachment and routing through the machine may help if the original component has already come loose.
Replacing a pull cord safely
Before dismantling anything, record how the existing cord runs through the mechanism and how it is attached. Bear in mind that an elastic cord, spring or winding mechanism may be under tension. Install the new component along the original route and test the return gently before fully loading the rowing machine.
