Olympic barbells for plates with 50 mm holes
An Olympic barbell is a versatile choice for strength training, powerlifting or weightlifting, depending on the model. These bars accept Olympic weight plates with 50 mm holes and are used in gyms, functional training spaces and home gyms.
Olympic bars come in different lengths and weights. Options include compact bars, technique bars for practising lifts and women’s weightlifting bars with a thinner grip and lower weight. Check each model’s dimensions, weight and intended use.
What is an Olympic barbell?
An Olympic barbell has loading sleeves with a diameter of 50 mm, for compatible plates with 50 mm holes. This measurement refers to the sleeves, not the grip. The system is widely used in gyms, but the Olympic designation alone does not mean a bar is approved for competition.
Many Olympic bars offer high load capacities and rotating sleeves supported by bushings, bearings or a combination of both. Strength, flexibility and rotation vary by model. Choose a bar suited to your exercises rather than assuming every Olympic bar is suitable for heavy lifting or dropping.
What Olympic barbell length do you need?
Compare length and weight separately. Common options include:
- Bars around 220 cm – many full-length models weigh 20 kg; check the specifications.
- Bars around 200 cm – length alone does not identify a 15 kg women’s weightlifting bar; check weight and grip diameter.
- Bars around 180 cm – compact options for smaller spaces; not every model fits a rack.
- Technique bars – lighter bars for practising movements, with model-specific load limits.
Choose according to your exercises, available space and bench or rack. For rack use, compare the distance between the inner sleeve collars with the rack width. Also check usable sleeve length and allow room to load plates.
Buying an Olympic barbell
Compare rated capacity, bar weight, grip diameter, knurling, sleeve rotation and finish. Needle bearings are not automatically better for every purpose: the rotation and feel should suit your training. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and only drop a loaded bar when the bar, plates and floor are expressly suitable.
