Gym balls: choose the right size for your training
A gym ball adds balance challenges to exercises for your abdominal muscles, back, legs and shoulders. Also known as a Swiss ball, stability ball or exercise ball, it is a versatile tool for core training, balance exercises and varied workouts. Explore standard and weighted gym balls in different sizes.
What is a gym ball?
A gym ball is a large, air-filled training ball that moves as you sit, lean or support yourself on it. Your body makes small adjustments to stay stable, engaging several muscle groups together. You can use it for crunches, bridges, squats, planks and a range of mobility and balance exercises.
Which gym ball size do you need?
As a rough guide for adults, a 55 cm ball often suits heights up to around 165 cm, a 65 cm ball around 165 to 180 cm, and a 75 cm ball taller users. The right size also depends on the exercise and inflation level. When seated, your hips and knees should be at roughly right angles, with your feet flat on the floor. These are starting points, not universal sizing rules: check the manufacturer’s size guide.
Standard or weighted Swiss ball?
A standard gym ball is light and easy to move. A weighted Swiss ball contains extra weight, helping it stay in place and making it less likely to roll away when at rest. This can be useful for certain strength, balance and group exercises. Alongside the ball’s own weight, check its diameter and maximum load capacity.
Which exercises can you do with a gym ball?
A gym ball can provide support or an unstable surface. Core exercises include ball crunches, planks and roll-outs. Bridges and leg curls involve the legs, glutes and core working together. The ball can also support squats, stretches and mobility exercises.
Using a gym ball as a seat
A gym ball can be used briefly as a seat, offering a change of position for short periods. Choose a size that lets your feet rest firmly on the floor and keeps your knees at roughly 90 degrees. A ball has no backrest or armrests, so it should not automatically be treated as a full replacement for a properly adjusted office chair.
What should you look for when buying a gym ball?
Consider the diameter, maximum load, material and recommended uses. Check whether a pump and stopper are included and whether the model has an anti-burst system. This feature does not make a ball puncture-proof. Use it on a level, clean surface without sharp objects and inspect it regularly for damage. Inflate it according to the manufacturer’s instructions and stay within the stated load limit.
