Rollers for treadmills

Rollers guide and tension a treadmill’s moving running belt. A damaged or worn roller can cause noise, play or uneven movement. Here you can find replacement rollers for specific brands and models. Check the machine model, roller position and connections before ordering.

What is a treadmill roller?

A treadmill generally has a front and rear roller around which the running belt moves. These cylindrical components keep the belt in position and allow it to move through the frame. Rollers usually contain a shaft and bearings and must turn without excessive resistance or play.

What does the front roller do?

On a motorised treadmill, the front roller is generally driven by the motor via a drive belt. It then transfers the movement to the running belt. Depending on the model, the front roller may have an integrated pulley or another model-specific connection.

What does the rear roller do?

The rear roller supports, tensions and centres the running belt. Its position can be changed using the adjustment bolts at the back. This allows the belt to be aligned between the side rails.

When should you replace a treadmill roller?

Possible signs of wear include scraping or clicking noises, noticeable play, stiff bearings or a roller that no longer rotates evenly. Damage to the roller surface, shaft or drive pulley may also make replacement necessary.

Is the roller actually the cause?

Noise or uneven movement may also be caused by a worn running belt, incorrect belt tension, a damaged deck or a loose drive belt. Check the entire drive system before ordering a roller. This helps prevent another fault from going unnoticed.

Are treadmill rollers universal?

No, treadmill rollers are generally designed for a specific brand and model. Length, diameter, shaft ends, bearings, mounting and any drive pulley must all match. Similar outside dimensions alone are not enough to establish compatibility.

How do you find the right roller?

Check the treadmill’s brand and full model designation and determine whether you need the front or rear roller. Also compare the part number and construction of the existing component. If the same model has several versions, the serial number or year of manufacture may also matter.

Installing and adjusting a treadmill roller

Unplug the treadmill from the mains and release the running belt tension before dismantling it. After installation, the belt must be centred again and gradually tensioned. Test the treadmill at low speed without a user first and check that the belt continues to run straight and evenly.
