Functional trainers and adjustable cable machines

A functional trainer lets you perform a wide range of strength exercises using cables and pulleys. Depending on the pulley positions and attachments, you can train with rows, chest flyes, pulldowns and core exercises. Adjustable cable outlets help you vary the direction of resistance for upper- and lower-body training.

Explore compact cable machines, wall-mounted systems and functional trainers with two integrated weight stacks. Choose a model that suits your experience, available space and resistance needs, and check which exercises its design supports.

What is a functional trainer?

A functional trainer is a strength machine that transmits resistance through cables and pulleys. Many models have height-adjustable cable outlets, allowing you to select different pulling and pressing angles. You control the movement path, which can also challenge stability and coordination depending on the exercise.

Dual adjustable pulleys

Dual adjustable pulleys, often abbreviated to DAP, provide two cable outlets whose heights can be adjusted separately. This allows exercises with both arms or one side at a time. Check whether the machine has separate weight stacks, how each outlet adjusts and which handles are included. Not every cable machine has this configuration.

Weight stacks or plate loading?

Integrated weight stacks let you select the load with a pin. Plate-loaded machines use separate weight plates, so check the loading capacity and plate compatibility. If a model accepts Olympic weight plates (50 mm), this refers to plates with a 50 mm hole diameter. Neither system automatically provides greater resistance: compare the rated capacity and effective resistance at the handle.

Functional trainer or multigym?

A functional trainer centres on cable exercises with a movement path you control. A multigym often combines guided press arms with dedicated exercise stations, although some models also include adjustable cables. Choose according to the exercises and type of support you prefer, rather than assuming either design suits every workout.

What should you check when choosing?

Compare pulley height range, cable travel, adjustment options, dimensions and maximum resistance. The pulley ratio affects the resistance at the handle and the cable travel relative to the weight stack. Do not compare stack weights alone: check the manufacturer’s stated ratio and effective resistance for each outlet. Also allow room for the full exercise movement and check mounting requirements, accessories and the permitted usage level.
