Pulleys and cable wheels for fitness equipment

A pulley, also called a cable wheel, guides the steel cable on a multi-gym or other fitness machine. A worn or damaged pulley can cause extra resistance, noise and cable wear. Browse our plastic and aluminium pulleys in different diameters and carefully check the dimensions and compatibility with your machine before ordering.

What is a pulley?

A pulley is a wheel over which a fitness machine’s steel cable runs. Pulleys guide the cable through the machine and allow the training resistance to be transferred smoothly. They are used in multi-gyms, functional trainers and other machines with a cable system.

When should you replace a pulley?

Check the pulleys if the cable no longer moves smoothly, makes unusual noises or feels jerky during an exercise. Cracks, broken edges, a worn cable groove or excessive play around the shaft may also indicate that replacement is needed. At the same time, check the steel cable for fraying, kinks and damage to its protective coating.

Plastic or aluminium pulley

Pulleys can be made from plastic or aluminium. The appropriate material depends on the machine’s design and the specifications of the original component. Do not choose solely by material or appearance: the diameter, width, cable groove and shaft size must also be correct.

How do you determine the right size?

Compare the new pulley with the original component. Check the outside diameter, overall width, width and shape of the cable groove, and shaft hole diameter. Also check the brand and exact model designation of the fitness machine. A pulley with the same outside diameter will not necessarily fit if its other dimensions differ.

Is every pulley universal?

No, many pulleys are designed for a specific machine or product range. A model name in the product details indicates the machine for which the pulley was originally intended. Universal use is only possible when all relevant dimensions, load capacity and mounting details match.

Replacing a pulley safely

Fully release the tension in the cable system before removing a pulley. Record or photograph the cable routing through the machine beforehand and install the new pulley in the same position. After installation, check that the wheel turns freely, the cable sits correctly in the groove and all fixings are secure before using the machine again.
