What are resistance bands?

Resistance bands are elastic training tools that offer increasing resistance as you stretch them. This keeps your muscles under tension through much of the movement. You can use them on their own, alongside strength training or to make certain exercises easier or harder.

Which types of resistance band are available?

Flat exercise bands are versatile tools for upper- and lower-body exercises. Mini bands and squat bands are closed loops often worn around the legs for glute, hip and leg exercises. Resistance tubes are round elastic tubes, sometimes fitted with handles, for movements such as rows and presses. Long loop bands, also known as strength bands, suit heavier resistance training and can also assist with pull-ups.

Which resistance level do you need?

Choose a resistance that lets you complete the full movement with control and good technique. A light band suits smaller muscle groups, warm-ups and exercises requiring a large range of motion. Heavier bands suit stronger movements and larger muscle groups. For assisted pull-ups, a stronger band provides more assistance, making the exercise easier. A set with several levels lets you adapt the resistance to each exercise and progress gradually.

Do not choose by colour alone

Many manufacturers use colours to identify resistance levels, but there is no universal colour code. A blue band from one brand may offer a different resistance from a blue band from another. Always compare the stated resistance level, dimensions and band type rather than relying on colour alone.

Resistance bands for home and travel

Exercise bands are compact, lightweight and easy to carry. They suit home gyms, travel workouts and gym sessions. With one or more bands, you can perform exercises such as squats, rows, presses, lateral walks and arm and shoulder movements without needing much training space.

Training safely with resistance bands

Before each workout, inspect your band for splits, signs of drying or other damage. Make sure it is securely anchored where required and does not rub against sharp edges. Stay within the manufacturer’s recommended stretch limit and control the return movement instead of letting the band snap back. If you are unsure about the resistance for an exercise, start lighter and increase it gradually.
